Skating, Snowmen and Gold Medals

Written by Debra

Last Sunday I promised my daughter we'd go skating.  There was laundry to do, bathrooms and a kitchen clean and vacuuming to be done.  I was exhausted after doing everything that needed to be done and I asked her if we could maybe go another day.  Her answer was "you promised".  Fair enough.  So we got ourselves ready to go just as the big hockey game was starting.

Outdoor Artists

Written by Debra

The Inuit have several different words for snow each denoting what sort of snow it is.  On Monday afternoon we got "tlamo - snow that falls in large wet flakes".  Monday night was perfect for sledding and building snow people and animals.  After the heat of Tuesday it turned into "kripya - snow that has melted and refrozen".  No longer great as a building material it was going to be a perfect canvas for some snow art.

Susana raised $9800 for Medecins sans Frontieres.

Written by Kari

Susana raised $9800 for Medecins sans Frontieres. We were happy to participate in the event. Emily,Cordelia and Elena baked cupcakes.- While others ate cupcakes.

As Russell said on his FB:
"On one small patch of front lawn in the east end of Toronto, on a chilly Saturday, $9800 was raised for Haiti relief. What Susana Molinolo sold were just cupcakes (don't get me wrong they were yummy). What the people who bought them ate was a symbol of community building and the ability of people to come together for a... much-needed cause without a lot of glitzy pomp. Simple, effective and every neighborhood could do something like this."

First Sled

Written by Debra

There was barely enough snow to do it but we did it.  We sledded down the hill at Kew Park this morning and it was great.  The baby wrapped in his snowsuit and wool bunting bag was held tightly by big sis as they raced down the hill.  Each time they went the squeals got louder and the sled went just a little bit further.

She had a goal if hitting the fence.  Alas we never achieved that goal.  I think we might need a bit more snow and some wax on the runners.  (can you wax a plastic sled?).

We weren't out long but long enough for 10 slides down the hill. 3 snow angels.  8 snowballs thrown at a tree trunk and 5 minutes of poking at an ice patch with a stick.

All in all I'd say the first sledding of the year was successful.

Beautiful Things I Saw Today

Written by Debra

By Debra Scott

Today the weather was not what we thought.  We woke up this morning to snow and a very excited little person who wanted to make snow angels and came into my room squealing with delight "it's snowing momma, there is snow everywhere, it is FINALLY winter".

When we finally got outside at 10:00 am the snow had turned to rain, the ground had turned to slush and there were only faint remnants on the occasional patch of ground that we'd even had snow this morning.  My daughter was distraught.  Her visions of snow angels and sledding were melting faster than the snow had.

Skating

Written by Debra

Its that time of year again.  The outdoor ice rinks are opening.  And Kew Rink opened December 1st .  What a warm and beautiful November and so far December we've had.  I can't wait to get out on the rink at the base of Lee Avenue again this year.

Last year my daughter and I went to the rink every Tuesday and Thursday morning.  We were often the only ones there and it was wonderful.  So calm and relaxed.  Sometimes we were there for half an hour other times she would get frustrated after five minutes.  Never the less we went and we made it fun.  I never forced her to stay if she wanted to go and somedays she'd say "just a few more minutes mom".  If skating was too much that day we'd spend time playing on the "SNOW MOUNTAIN" that appears every year right beside the rink and a favourite for kids of all ages.

I'm really excited to see how she skates this year.  She's a whole year older with more balance and more abilities and confidence.

Last year before we ventured out we went to Play it Again Sports and got ourselves some used skates and skate guards.  We put them on and she practiced walking around the living room with the guards on for balance.  A skating teacher friend of ours told us to go straight into the single blade skates and practice in the living room and forego the double bladed bobbie skates, so we followed her advice and it worked for us.

We also watched some figure skating on T.V.  I think this was a motivator for my daughter. She loved to watch the pretty girls in their sparkly dresses flying over the ice.  Somedays it made her sad that she couldn't do it like those girls could.  I simply told her that they'd been doing it for years and they all started just like her.  It worked for us but some kids might not respond the same way to this exposure.

I really enjoyed getting out and skating on the rink twice a week.  I'm sure it helped my figure.  And I was always amazed at how empty the free skate was but how the pick up hockey game was always jam packed with young men in the middle of the day during the week.  I always wondered where they all came from.  I guess when it comes to Canada's favourite pastime where there is a will there is a way.

 The public Skate is Free.

Wednesday 2 th of December

Written by Debra

We had a gorgeous day at Kew Gardens with a lot of free play in sunshine. We also tried a new game the listening game. I got the idea from Debi in goexplorenature.blogspot.com. We sat down around a tree, counted to twenty and tried to be quiet for 1 minute, and listen very hard for different noises.

 Fall

That was not easy for little girls; they were more interested in playing.

Interesting the two boys did better; they actually managed to be quiet and told us they heard birds and car noises.

Fall

We finished with hot chocolate and sandwiches.

Last tuesday we celebrated Halloween in Withrow Park. The children created a ghost town in the sand and they also created their own ghosts.
