Nature's Playground

We like to use nature as our playground, but when we want to go to an actual playground, this one is our favorite- it's the playground on Cambridge Common just outside of Harvard Square.  We don't get there a lot because it is far away, but it's a great one- my favorite!  It's different from your average playground with its nontraditional structures which are made of wood- a lot (or all of it, I can't remember) comes from trees that had to be cut down in other parts of the town.  It also has formed hills and a small labyrinth which gives the playground a nice landscape.

We were lucky enough to get there today and the boys played for three hours!  It would have been more if I didn't have to drag them out.  There was also a man who brought his son to the playground and watched him play as he set up his guitar and a mic and quietly played a nice mix of children's song and child friendly songs.  It was a blustery but warm day and we had a great time.  Check it out if you're in the neighborhood!  The pictures don't do it justice.

The founder of the website Kaboom, which promotes play for children, is releasing a book called Kaboom: How oOne Man Built a Movement to Save Play.  If you donate $15 or more to Kaboom before April 8th, they will send you a copy of the book.  Here's the info:

We had great weather for our playgroup on Tuesday- so nice that we weren't the only ones there!  I'll have to start finding a way to identify myself on the playground so you can find us!  This is a good thing :)

Next week we'll be at  the Kids' Landing playground behind the Tufts Library in Weymouth on Broad Street in the MORNING at 10:30.  My sons and I will probably be there a little before then if you want to join us early.  I will have my small black diaper bag over my shoulder with a blue handkerchief tied to it.  See you then!

Gear for the Wet and Rainy Season

Polarn O. Pyret rain pants- my best investment this year.

I had been looking for pants like these- donned by my cousins' children in Iceland- but never came across any.  I found some this style online but didn't know what kind of quality to expect, so until last November we just had one dinky pair of "rain pants" from REI which were just elastic waisted pants.  Then POP finally started selling in the US and we got our hands on these lovely rain pants.

These pants are great in so many ways- EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE A PAIR!  Put them right over their fleeces or jackets if it's cold out and they're protected whether they're digging in dirt, jumping in puddles or sledding in really wet snow.

Gone are the days of me telling my kids not to jump in huge rain puddles.

Gone are the days of going through multiple pairs of pants while digging in the garden.

Gone are the days of thinking that the playground is too wet to play on.

Nothing is too wet when you have a pair of these and some rain boots!

Grab a pair today:

I'm a walking advertisement for POP by my own choice ;)

Thawing Out

So it's still a little chilly out there, but there is barely any snow to be seen and I have to say at this point that I'm happy about that.  This week we had a nice meetup at the Wollaston playground, but the week before it was only me and my boys and one very, very icy park.  Too icy- glad it's finally gone!
Next week:  Holbrook Playground, Tuesday, March 15th, 3:30.  The playground is located next to the Dunkin' Donuts at 57 South Franklin Street in Holbrook.

See you then!

Outing, Thursday, February 10th

Our next outing is tomorrow, Thursday, February 10th at Beals Park.  We had to do it on Thursday instead of Tuesday this week.  However, it looks as if it's going to be a bit chilly tomorrow, so please check to see if the outing will be held.  If it "feels like" less than 20 degrees at 3pm tomorrow then we will not have playgroup.  If we do have playgroup, a member of the group is doing a promotion for chocolate milk, so we will have plenty to drink!
