This year local farms around the Charlotte area hosted their third annual Tour of Farms. Its a great way to introduce city kids to where their food comes from, the important farm to fork connection, and to remind us all the importance of buying local fresh foods. http://knowyourfarms.com/.

This year we only made a few stops. An organic vegetable farm and a pig farm. Both big hits with the kids, they especially loved the baby pigs only 7 days old. My son decided instead of a dog, his new buddy could be a pig.

(Seriously, 12 at a time?!...Gives a whole new meaning to "multiples"!)

We learned lots about pigs, but I found it especially facinating that when a female has piglets around the same time of another, the farmers stick then into the same area and its a communal-nursing fest. As in, doesn't matter who's piglet it is, they feed each other's babies! Wow.

I've never personally been to a pig farm. It was awesome to see how they organize all the animals and interesting to learn a bit more about the pig and especially to learn how smart they are. Look at that face!

After the tour, the farm offered a sampling of meats on sandwiches and tacos. It was deliciously fresh. Even though we all had to try just a little bit harder to swallow...

My daughter asked, "This isn't a baby pig I'm eating, is it Mommy?"

"No sweetie."

"Good, 'cause it sure is yummy!"

Can't wait for next year!

We have a few farms inside the city...we've gone every year since my oldest was a year old for pumpkins or Christmas trees. They do the whole wagon ride to the barn bit...Only problem is is that it's started to get overrun by swarms of people. The cute little farm in the city is now making the big bucks and has completely lost its charm. Got to drive OUT, WAY OUT to get that in Charlotte. :)

    Hi Brandy,
We so need to a visit a farm soon in the country. Here in Toronto we are lucky to have a urban farm in the city called Riverdale Farm. It is oasis in the city for kids, and we try to go there 1 time each season. This Sunday we are going for outdoor Birthday/halloween party.
