Please note the final vote on these proposed cuts will take place at the City Council meetings of January 17, 18 & 19, 2012 as part of the 2012 Budget deliberations.
Councillor McMahon will be hosting a Town Hall on the budget and affordable housing in early January (date and location TBA). Details will be posted on our website shortly http://www.councillormcmahon.com
Pools and Community Centre cuts: Councillor McMahon is strongly opposed to the proposed cuts to pool and recreation programs in Ward 32. "I am shocked to find out we are looking at closing the city's programs in some of our Community Centres and pools shared with TDSB. We are working closely with the affected organizations to try to prevent these closures at Duke of Connaught/S.H. Armstrong and Bowmore/Fairmount Community Centre. If they are indeed operating at less than capacity, we need to work together to figure out how to raise more revenues through permitting and additional activities. David Crombie and the Aquatics Working Group are ready and willing to help anyone with their ideas and proven methods. Our children's and our community's health and safety is not something we should be cutting costs on!"All are welcome at the next Aquatics Working Group meeting on Dec 15, 5 – 6 pm, Metro Central YMCA, 20 Grosvenor St, Auditorium.
Transit: Councillor McMahon feels that cutting transit services is the wrong thing to do for Ward 32 and the entire city. "We are crippling the city with congestion and suffocating ourselves with poor air quality. We are a world class city with an antiquated transit system." Councillor McMahon opposes these service reductions but also recognizes the need for a realistic approach to funding and transit planning. "We need to look at other funding models - toll roads, congestion levies and/or street parking rate increases that would be allocated specifically to transit. Let's work together to find ways to get the city moving more sustainably and give TTC riders value for their money and travel time."
