The Last Harvest of the Season!

Well, I finally finished the gardening for the year.  A bit sad really, to pull up all the tomato plants, even though the slugs enjoyed most of the tomatos.  Even the cucumber plant that had yeilded so much this year had to go.  It didn't dissappoint.. there was one last cuc for us to enjoy.

tomatos

We dug it all up and I heaved a sigh of relief and got a little excited about next years crop.  I learned so much in my first year with my very own garden, without my mom tell me this or that.  I made tonnes of mistakes that I hope not to repeat and maybe next year I won't lose so much of my harvest to the raccoons, squirrels and slugs.

But after clearing it all out, adding the coffee grounds and tilling the soil, it is nice too look at that little plot of land behind my house and dream about the possibilities for next year.  All my gardening mistakes are gone.  Only an emply plot, soon to be covered with snow.  And in the spring I can start afresh and with hope.  I like that about spring.

almost donehole

But for now, I'll enjoy winter.  No more weeding for a few months.  Just plotting and planning and ordering seeds.  What do you plan to plant next spring?

I think next year I'll plant cucumbers again - because they did so amazingly this year.

I'll plant zucchini (corgette) because we love them and heck if they grow in yellowknife they'll grow here.

I'm going to plant corn again - I have ideas how to keep the raccoons and squirrels away from their succulent stalks. And attempt the three sisters again.

I'm going to try bush beans because I did them once in Vancouver and they were awesome and yielded tonnes of beans.

I'm going to do squash because the year before I had a garden I planted some sprouted squash seeds that came in a squash and then forgot about them and they grew with absolutely NO tending to.. and they were big and beautiful. Now that's my kind of plant!

I"m going to forgo the tomatoes because no one really likes them in my family. I had high hopes that fresh tomatoes from the vine would change their minds but it didn't. And I'm allergic so unless I make sauce they go to waste.. and this year the slugs got most of them, which was depressing but they took up so much room too. SO maybe I'll be the tomato-less gardener.

I'm undecided on carrots. I planted them this year (beside the tomatoes) but not a single carrot grew. - or maybe they got dug up? I think they just didn't grow because they didn't get enough sunlight.. the tomatoes overshadowed them. But tomatoes and Carrots are supposed to grow well together. I dunno we'll see.

and lettuce. My lettuce grew well but this year I think I'll grow romaine or head lettuce - as a kid I remember loving head lettuce freshly grown.

so I'm already plotting and planning.

You know the hardest part of gardening? its getting started!

I'll tell you what.. dig a "fox hole" and the older one will come round. We dug out an old tree root and ended up with this MASSIVE hole.. Buda jumped in and the big one couldn't wait for her turn.. she was almost in tears when we filled it it!

I know that's not really "gardening" but she had fun in the dirt anyway.

    Hi Debra,
It sounds like your garden did do great this year, that is great to be the first season.
My garden is also ready for winter, only a few kales and that is it. My oldest daughter was not so keen helping out in the garden this year, but to my surprise my 2 year old loved to help out.
