Flower ice cubes

flowercubes

We have violets in our backyard, and our kids love to pick and play with them. They love to put them in vases and make potions. Violets are edible and can be used in salads or as cake decorations, as frosted violets.

We decided we were going to make the violets last a little bit longer by preserving them in ice cubes this year

Cook with kids outside

When it starts to be warm and nice outside it starts to be time for some al fresco eating. Getting ready for the BBQ season it something we are looking forward to in this house. I notice when I was in Europe it was very popular to create outdoor kitchens. It can be done very simple or you can just take the ingredients with you outside.

Fiddlehead Pizza

Have you ever eaten fiddlhttp://www.norcliff.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/34.jpgeheads before? Before I noticed them in my local store here in Toronto my first spring here in Canada, I didn't even know what they were. Since then I have had a lovely relationship with fiddleheads.

Here is a pizza recipe from my friends over at Norcliff Farms Inc. If you don't have any fiddleheads you can replace it with asparagus. Add a comment

Spring Cooking

Are you happy spring is here? So am I, not because nice weather, but because of fresh produce. For me asparagus and artichokes are a sign of spring, as well as kids playing with dandelions and violets. Being so lucky to live in Ontario I have been introduced to fiddleheads as well. So this is a sure sign of spring for me too. I'm happy to say my kales are producing and that rhubarb is growing in my small backyard.

Fish pack

fishpack1We visited an after school program here in Norway that spends all their time outdoors in all kinds of weather. Cooking outdoors on an open fire was an important activity for the camp kids. When we visited, they had fish with leek, carrots and potatoes in foil.

Valentine Picnic ideas

Dress the youngster s warmly; grab the summer picnic blanket, your favorite Valentine picnic treats and head out to have an afternoon of winter fun. It is no snow at Toronto at the moment so I think it safe to say that we will be skating for our outdoor valentine picnic this year in our community ice rink close to our house if the winter will stay in Toronto.
