Picnic Lunches Made Easy by Courtney

IMG_2042

We pack picnic lunches a lot.  We love to get outside and eating outside affords us more active time- plus no mess for me to clean up at home!  My son goes to school in the afternoons so when we want to maximize our time out in the morning we pack lunch so we don't have to waste time driving home to make lunch. I hate to be that person that says, "I did this before everyone else", but I did.   I'm not referring to picnic lunches, no, of course they've been around forever, but my interest in Japanese bento style lunch and alternative reusable lunch containers is one that I've had for a long time.

Back to school lunches

schoolpicnicfrontBack to school means less outdoor time in this house. So it is best to find creative ways to get outside during the week. If you bring your child home for lunch you can have a picnic in a local park or at the school playground. It takes a little planning, but nothing beats some al fresco dining with lots of outdoor play.

Outdoor Play Birthday Party

birtdayparty1This is not a post about the perfect planned party; instead it is about a low key outdoor birthday party.  As some of you might know I always do outdoor birthdays for my kids even in the winter, but this summer I was very excited to plan for the first time an outdoor party in the summer, for my daughter’s 2 year birthday party.

Camp food

campfood3Last week we went to our old style cottage here in Norway by the Swedish border. Our cottage is about 100 years old and was made by my great grandfather and my kids are the 5th generation who has enjoyed it.It is not a fancy cottage by today’s standards. It has an outhouse, no power, no running water and we have to hike to get to even get to the cabin. The water come from the well and for cooking we are using an old wood stove or we cook over open fire outside.I love to cook on open fire but my kids love it even more. On our last trip we also did fair bit of foraging as well. So much fun outside!

Climb a cherry tree: Make a cake

cherriesfront

In my parents garden in Norway they have a cherry tree. Every year we are having fun climbing the cherries trees and picking cherries. Everybody in the family is helping picking the cherries; toddlers picking from smaller branches and my tree-loving daughter is high in the tree to reach the cherries.

From our garden: Potato chips

potatoesfrontIf you have been following us for a while you know that we grow potatoes every year. We have tried different methods every year and this year, we grew potatoes from seed potatoes bought at a nursery to see if we got better results then last year.

Anyway, growing potatoes is a rewarding and fun activity to do with kids, but it also teaches your kids food knowledge. After all, potatoes might be the most used vegetable at the dinner table.
