Your guide to cross country skiing
By Kari Svenneby

You might think I’m a cross-country skiing expert since I’m from Norway. Though it is true that cross-country skiing is the national sport of Norway, it’s not like everyone is skiing like they should be the next Bjørn Dæhlie.
For most Norwegians it is more of a lifestyle and a way to get around to enjoy nature. If you ever get a chance to ski in Norway after a snowfall you will notice everyone is outside skiing; from the old to the young or the athletic to the handicapped. Some will even put on their skis for their commute to the office.

My daughter, Alexis, has always had a hard time trying new things. Even having her taste a new breakfast cereal has been a tricky task in the past, so you can imagine how much trouble it was to get her to try out a new sport! And this isn’t simply swimming or hockey we’re talking about; oh no, something a little more extreme: skiing.

Time for ski season

I think all of us remember the excitement of the first snowflakes in the winter. I still think it is exciting and I just want to get out and play in the snow. Winter is a great time for family activities.
The ski season is knocking at our doors, resorts open their mountains and ski runs in the beginning of December. So time to gear up for skiing.

When I was seven years old my parents took me on a trip to the Swedish mountains and I tried downhill skiing for the first time. I remember it was really difficult but also really fun. Since then my family went on ski vacations every year to different ski resorts in the northern part of Sweden. Just being together as a family those weeks and having fun outside all day are some of my most precious memories from my childhood. I have many lovely memories of skiing in the piste (trail) and off-piste in the forest, singing in the lift, drinking hot chocolate and having a traditional sauna after a whole day of skiing.
