Back to school: Go play

By Kari Svenneby
Getting back to school is an exciting time for both parents and kids. A Recent report by the National Wildlife Federation, “Back to School: Back Outside,” key finding was that kids who spend time outdoors both at school and home, become higher-performance learners and score higher on standardized tests. For more on their key findings, check out National Wildlife Federation’s Back to School: Back Outside.

What we don’t know, we won’t protect

By Hege Jakobsen Lepri
Probably the best moment I had this summer happened right in front of my house, rather an unexpected place for a rush of endorphins. My 17-year-old, who was so exhausted from last school year that she spent 3 days in her pyjamas, doing nothing but sleeping and watching bad television, finally got sick of my nagging and went out for a walk. When I went out to the front yard an hour later, I found her on the front steps, looking intently at a snail that was working its way across a leaf. She turned around with eyes that finally had got their sparkle back, saying isn't it wonderful, isn't it beautiful to see how it moves with its house on its back!? The reverence and awe in her reassured me that everything isn't lost, that her connection to nature is still stronger that her addiction to 'Say Yes to the Dress". My "mommy super-ego" was placated: Fortunately a little screen time won't completely undo the values exchanged in 17 years of growing and developing together.

Access to Natural Resources and Private Property Rights

So I went to Maine to get away from the city and take a dip into Nature. Some may object that driving from Canada, for 2 days – and 1000 km – to Maine, would seem like a huge detour (with a major carbon footprint attached to it). And, yes, this is true, but for someone who grew up 75 m from the sea (and married to someone who spent all his summers at the seaside), letting go of the idea of salt water as a necessary ingredient in a real summer, was just too hard. Then a good neighbour offered us a week at her mom’s house in Down-East Maine, and all of sudden we had a wonderful excuse to go.

Get Your Smokey On

By Russell Gienapp
I hope you are out enjoying nature this summer regardless if it is in the city or out in the wild nature. Having a campfire brings back many childhood memories for me camping with my family. I still remember the epiphany I experienced eating my first smore. Who knew what kind of magic you could create with a marshmallow, chocolate and two graham crackers.
