PRESS RELEASE: Active Kids Club Cleans Up At Oriole Park
Date: Sunday 6th April 2008,
AKC has been meeting weekly at Oriole Park
for over 2 years now, with the motto "No bad weather,
only bad clothing". The group came about because
Founder, Kari Svenneby, was playing with her
(then 1 year old) daughter in the middle of winter and
no one else was around.
She wanted to encourage others to come out and enjoy
the weather... all weather. Organizing a weekly
gathering
was embraced and the group enjoys all kind of
activities outside during the fall, winter and spring
when many others stay indoors.
As the snow melts and makes way for puddle jumping and
paper boat sailing another issue has reared its ugly
head. Garbage...
This year the park seems to have more garbage than in
the past years. Perhaps it is the extra snow that hid
more garbage from
sight or perhaps that snow kept it from blowing away.
Whatever the reason, it is there and it is
ugly. Recent reports
say the city lacks the funds to clean it
up. Where does that leave the kids of Active Kids
Club?
Well it leaves them and their parents in a position to
do some volunteer work. This Sunday 6th April 2008
many members of the Active kids club gathered to
have a party to say goodbye to one of our original
members who is moving out of country. After the party they took some garbage bags and cleaned
the park of its trash.
"For us being green means being connected to nature", says
Svenneby. "By embracing natural elements, our children
learn to love spending time in nature.
It is their love for nature that instills respect of
the world around them."
Setting an example for all park users... Active Kids
Club takes care of its park.

Active Kids Club in Oriole Park, Toronto

We are an international group of parents who come from all over the world. Our aim is to connect children with nature and be active with our kids. Instead of meeting in a library or indoor playground: we meet outside. We believe that connecting our children with nature is real natural-organic living. Our participants are active parents who want to pass on active lifestyle on to their children.
It all started in the early spring of 2006 with one mother who wanted to meet other active parents and kids outside in all kinds of weather. The little group grew and today we are not only have a core Toronto chapter with about 20 committed parents with children who get together once a week in a local park, but we have members for the USA, Canada and Europe.
Our group is free with no member fees and everyone who is interested in being a part of our group is welcome. This means our playgroup is run by our members who are the parents of the active kids in our group. We are not instructors or teachers, just ordinary parents who want to meet other active parents in the park. This means you are responsible for your child and also responsible for engaging your child. What actives you want to do is up to you. Although we love to share ideas and hear new ones.
Last year we did many different actives from jumping in puddles, playing with leaves, skiing, sledding, hunting for Easter eggs, making dandelion crowns and playing in the splash pad. Our activities have been base on the opportunities each season gives us. We always have a circle time when we meet. Check out our Songbook
Our playgroup is structured like this so we share the job of being the host for our meeting in the park. We always have three parents who are committed to come to the park, so that people always know that someone is going to be there no matter what.

Midtown Parent Network
Is a Toronto based network of moms and dads who live in midtown Toronto who offer support & advice in a non-judgemental non-denominational environment. We all met at local playgroups and had meetings once a week to discuss the finer points of parenting, but as our children got older and much more active we have morphed into a more event/ activity group. Some of us meet regularly at our weekly park get together, others who have gone back to work we see only at special events, like nature walks in all seasons, our pumpking picking adventure & Halloween party in the fall, picnics at the beach in summer and cross country skiing in the winter and visiting the botanical garden in the sping to learn about how seeds grow. Communication about the schedule of the outdoor play group in the Midtown area is done here.
Midtown Parent Network has a yahoo group where we connect and find out what is going on. Memebership, is by invitation only. Our policy is simply that we have to meet first. For more information contact debra@activekidsclub.com
