Dressing for the weather is the key to enjoying the outdoors in all kinds of weather. Spring can still be cold and windy, but then it can be rainy days or mild days. It can be a challenge to dress because it not really cold and it not really hot. The layering system works just as well for spring as it does for winter. If it starts getting warm take an inner layer off and inversely if it starts getting nippy, put an extra sweater on under their rain suit. It is the best way to regulate temperature.
The purpose of the inner layer is to keep you warm and keep moisture away from your body so you don’t get cold and wet. It also transports vapor away from the body.
You have basically three options for an inner layer.
- Wool
- Synthetic fiber
- Blend of wool and synthetic fiber
We don’t recommend cotton is as an inner layer. Cotton absorbs moisture and sweat and keeps it next to your skin. Wet cotton doesn't trap body heat and actually works against you as the liquid in the cotton garment evaporates. When the fluid evaporates, it creates a cooling effect and your body temperature will drop.
Wool can in some cases absorb up to 35% of its own weight in water and still retain its insulative value. Wool is back and it does not itch any more, thanks to new technology, and using the finest quality of Merino wool. Wool is nature’s insulation, and is the best options for an inner layer.
Synthetic fiber underwear absorbs very little sweat and allows water vapor to wick away from the body, but lose its insulating properties when wet.
A blend of wool and synthetic fiber has a mixture of advantages and disadvantages.
Wear raingear on really wet and rainy days and wear waterproof and windproof clothes on other days.
When it comes to raingear choose a rain suit made from coated nylon and not PVC.
PVC is not good for the environment and it can be harmful for child.
Don’t just settle for a jacket. Active children need a jacket, rain pants and comfortable rubber boots that protect them from getting wet and makes it fun for them jumping in the puddles. Tip: Commercial fishermen put rubberbands around their rain pants cuffs over their rubber boots to help keep water out.
Remember, if it isn’t raining but the ground is a bit wet and muddy, you can have them wear their rain pants to help keep their cloths from getting dirty and wet.
