Skating – The Canadian tradition
Making a backyard rink
By Leigh Mitchell
This winter we have waited quite some time for snow. So much so that when it finally came I truly felt like a kid again. I discovered how much I love sledding in -25 weather (just wear your snow pants, hot pockets and scarfs!). My son felt that I was a hero - out there in the cold, racing up the hill. It is a great way to get exhilarating exercise (something that treadmills just can't give you). Given that I was pregnant last winter I was excited to have some cold thrills again, ones that were not permitted last winter.
Ice Castle
While we are waiting for the light
It’s cold and freezing, maybe even borderline to be too cold to be outside. Some people take advantage of the cold, and make big beautiful ice hotels, I would love to stay one night in the Ice Hotel in Québec or in Sweden where I might get lucky enough to see the northern lights, but you have to pay a lot of money to stay there for a night. Ice hotels are an example of brilliant architecture and art that will melt away in the spring. Well a stay there might just be a dream for me, but it gave me some great inspiration to make a mini ice castle with my kids. It is a great way to utilize the freezing temperatures for making some ice art.

If you are lucky enough to have snow where you live you have so many opportunities for fun outdoor play.
Now in the winter it is important to be in motion when you play outside, so you keep yourself and your kids warm. It is the winter that is our peak season here in activekidsclub.com. There is so much to do; it is only our imagination that stops us.
Holiday crafts
Happy Holidays
However you celebrate this Holidays season, it is an excellent time of year to do some craft together with your family. In my family we are celebrating Christmas. I remember my childhood with found memoires of gingerbread cookies and making Christmas decorations with my mom. I feel so lucky to continue this tradition with my children today.
Nature offers some great opportunities for making Christmas ornaments; in our family we use natural elements in our Christmas creations. Of course…
How to dress for winter

No bad weather, only bad clothing
Dressing right for the weather is the key to enjoying outdoor adventures both for adults and children. For the active outdoor adult, it has long been the consensus that layering is the best system for comfort and warmth. With multiple layers you can adjust the combination to the weather and the level of exertion and changes in temperature.
Cross country skiing

By Jennie Aronsson
When I was a child, growing up in the north of Sweden, cross-country skiing was an easy way of getting around when there was just too much snow to walk. I grew up on a farm in a small village, close to the lake, surrounded by fields and with the forest nearby. The skis would come on whenever we needed them – to go down to the lake for ice-fishing , to go out in the forest to look for animal tracks, go for a visit to a neighbour, or just to get outside on a sunny winter day. With skis on, you could move easily even in the deepest snow.
