Winter

Ice art

By Andrea LeDuc
Its a freezing cold day with warnings that children should only be outside for 10 -30 minutes.  What to do?  Make some ice art!!  The kids and I went thru the recycling bin looking for juice boxes and other fun containers.  What kid doesn't love pouring water into containers and dropping food colouring?  Be careful when filling up balloons.  I forgot to add the food colouring first and had a splash of blue all over my kitchen. It also turns out that a 3 year old can add an awful lot of colouring in the blink of an eye LOL.

Make snow savvy kids

One thing that connects indigenous peoples of all the Nordic countries of the world is that they have so many words for different kinds of snow. I was wondering today if the Inuit have different words for snow because of all the different things they can do with snow? I think we have a lot to learn from these cultures.

Make a snow fort

Do you have a snow fort memory from your childhood? I do…

One of my fondest childhood snow forts was in rural Norway. My father took the day off on a snow day and helped us build a snow fort. Or, maybe it was more like a snow hut? He made it with a roof of pine boughs and I remember we could stand up in it and it became “the” hang out place for the neighborhood kids.

Urban bushing

By Kari Svenneby
It was one of those days in Toronto when the city was snowed in. Some folks might say it is the perfect day to stay inside, but we said it was the perfect day to embrace the weather! It was white with beautiful snow everywhere and blue skies and sun. It was a perfect day for urban bushing.

One of the great things about living in Toronto is that it has a fantastic park system with ravines and parks that usually connect together.

Forcing spring

 By Kari Svenneby

Lately I have felt that spring in the air. Yesterday it was 5°C or 41°F here in Toronto; a beautiful day with sunshine. It was also a perfect day to spend some time in our backyard. In the end of the winter on a warm day it is great to look and see if you have any buds on your trees. Living in a city, I do not have a big backyard, but I’m lucky to have a pussy willow tree in my backyard. We where happy to see there were buds on the branches as well on my birch tree. We picked some branches to force them to come to life.

Bottle Games

 Olympic games

Today we are hosting Olympic themed games in the Beach, Toronto. An event to celebrate our community, we are also going to fundraise “Sprouts of Hope (growing kit for Haiti) as well has ice art and snow paint for the kids. It is the winter Olympics right? In the spirit of the Olympic we are having ski jumping and bobsled contest. We are little luckier with the weather here in Toronto than in Vancouver, but not much. Though we haven’t had any rain, we have carried snow in sleds and wheelbarrows from the near by snow at the ice rink for two days.We have done as they do in Vancouver. Finally our bobsled and ski jump is done for our bottles.
