How to dress for winter

No bad weather, only bad clothing
Dressing right for the weather is the key to enjoying outdoor adventures both for adults and children. For the active outdoor adult, it has long been the consensus that layering is the best system for comfort and warmth. With multiple layers you can adjust the combination to the weather and the level of exertion and changes in temperature.

Cross country skiing

By Jennie Aronsson
When I was a child, growing up in the north of Sweden, cross-country skiing was an easy way of getting around when there was just too much snow to walk. I grew up on a farm in a small village, close to the lake, surrounded by fields and with the forest nearby. The skis would come on whenever we needed them – to go down to the lake for ice-fishing , to go out in the forest to look for animal tracks, go for a visit to a neighbour, or just to get outside on a sunny winter day. With skis on, you could move easily even in the deepest snow.

Skating with kids

By Debra Scott

Its that time of year again.  The outdoor ice rinks are opening in Canada and the Northern US.  My local rink (Kew Rink in Toronto) opened December first. We have had such a warm and beautiful November and December I can't wait to get out on the rink this year and enjoy the milder side of winter. Last year my daughter and I went to the rink every Tuesday and Thursday morning.  We were often the only ones there and it was wonderful.  So calm and relaxed.  Sometimes we were there for half an hour other times she would get frustrated after five minutes.  Never-the-less we went regularly and we made it fun.  I never forced her to stay if she wanted to go and I just loved it on those days when she'd say "just a few more minutes mom".  If skating was too much that day we'd spend time playing on the "SNOW MOUNTAIN" that appears every year right beside the rink and a favourite for kids of all ages.

Let there be color

 By Kari Svenneby
Food coloring can be uses for so many things; it is not just limited to decorating cakes, but also for some fun activities in the snow. Our kids and adults loves making snow art in the snow. It hardly cost anything and is so easy to do whereever you live you just need some snow. Both activities simulate grow and fine motor skills, imagination, science, and of course some exercise.

Winter wonderland

By Kristen Maxwell
The leaves have begun to fall, the air is cool and my daughter and I have begun to collect leaves to decorate the dinner table.  Yes, fall is upon us with winter on its heels.  Last year my daughter’s favourite winter fun was making snow angels. I wonder what will tickle her fancy this year.  Recently I came across a book called I Love Dirt!: 52 Activities to Help You and Your Kids Discover the Wonders of Nature , by Jennifer Ward; she offers many inspiring ideas for outdoor play on cold, snowy days.
