Outdoor Birthday Party

By Kari Svenneby

There are a lot of commercial venues in North America from indoor playgrounds to chain restaurants that cater to children’s birthday parties. But, we decided to host a birthday party for our daughter in a place where the children could run and play and get as loud as they want… Outside

Possibilities, endless

Once we started to plan our outdoor party for our 3 year-old daughter, we discovered that the possibilities were endless. Since our oldest’s birthday is in the winter and we are lucky to live where we have a real winter, we planned activities with snow and cold in mind. We had to decide if we wanted to have a skating party, sledding party, skiing party or even a nature hike looking for animals in the winter during a hike and end with an outdoor picnic.

Planning was easy

The planning was pretty easy, we sent out our invitations on Evite.com, reminded people that this was an outdoor party and to dress warm. We prepared soup, snacks and cakes in advance. Our loot bags were simple with stickers to give a little instant gratification and peat pellets with sunflower seed in them so the kids could see a seed grow and plant it in the ground come spring.

Winter party in Local Park

We decided to keep it easy and convenient for our guests and held an outdoor party in our local park with different activities. Not knowing what the weather was going to bring, we rented a room at a restaurant to warm up and have hot soup and birthday cake. The obvious concern is that you need a plan B for inclement weather for the food and cake part of the party.

Fall party at an urban farm

My daughter and I have some great friends. I’m happy to say we are not the only ones doing outdoor birthday parties. Recently we were invited to an outdoor party at an urban farm in Toronto. It was a pre-halloween costume party. A smorgousparty with food and drinks outside. The kids got to pet animals and enjoy nature play with each other, while the parents drank hot apple cider and chatted.

Start planning your outdoor birthday party

Start planning your kid’s birthday party in the natural world. You will definitely get a one of kind party your child and your guests will remember for a long time. We got a lot complements after the party that this was a one of kind party. So my daughter’s birthday parties are only going to be outside party from now one. I think the next one is going to be a skating party with princesses…

Let me know where your next party is going to be?
